Camel and Zebra Long ago, there were two best friends—a camel and a zebra. Zebra considered itself very glamorous with its black and white coat, and it regarded the camel as an ugly creature with humped back, odd legs, and ugly eyelashes. One day, Camel asked Zebra to come and play with it in the mud. Zebra refused. It said that its black and white coat would get dirty. Camel was sad to hear this and it played in the mud alone while sitting there wondering why Zebra had ignored it. A few days later, a sudden drought struck. All the water in the forest began to dry up. The turtles complained about the lack of water in the lake they usually drank from every day. This made Zebra very worried. It saw a donkey carrying a bucket of water on his back and asked if it could give it some water. The donkey hesitated because it also needed the water for itself. Zebra felt confused and went to its best friend. Camel said it could take Zebra to an oasis because camels have a strong sense of smell, which they could use to detect the oasis. Zebra was surprised to see the camel’s calmness in such a difficult situation. Suddenly, Zebra said that it hates Camel’s hump, which was a water storage that can be used to survive for several weeks, even a month. Camel also mentioned its hooves, which allowed it to walk through the hot sand of the desert. Camel’s thick skin protected it from sandstorms and heat, and its eyelashes also helped keep its eyes protected during the storm. Camel did not hesitate to help its friend and kept Zebra sheltered beneath it during the sandstorm. Zebra was deeply grateful to its friend for the help it provided, and it realized that not all ugly things are useless. They returned to playing together happily after the drought ended. Paul J. Crutzen: A Scientist Who Protected the Sky Paul J. Crutzen was a scientist from the Netherlands who explored the mysteries of the sky. He was born in Amsterdam in 1933. As a child, he loved to watch the sky–the bright blue in the morning, the golden glow at sunset, and the soft movement of clouds. He wanted to protect the air we breathe. His curiosity led him to study chemistry and focus on the Earth’s atmosphere. During his research, Paul found a danger in the air. He discovered that some invisible gases were slowly destroying the ozone layer, the shield that protects people and animals from strong sunlight. He knew that if this continued, the world could suffer. In 1995, Paul’s discoveries won him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, honoring his fight to save the atmosphere. He proved that chemical sprays and factory pollution were poisoning the air, making the ozone layer easy to break like thin ice. Because of his research, world leaders changed laws to protect the sky, ensuring future generations could still feel the sun’s warmth without harm. Paul’s work was not only about the ozone layer. In 2000, he introduced the word “Anthropocene.” He believed that humans were changing the planet through pollution, machines, and cutting down forests. His idea helped scientists understand how human actions affect nature. After that, he worked in Germany, helping students and researching ways to keep the air clean. He wanted a world where children could run under a bright blue sky without worrying about pollution. He knew that people had the power to heal or harm nature. His work warned people to protect nature. Until his last days, Paul kept searching for answers. Paul passed away in 2021, but his work still affects science today. Adapted from: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Paul-Crutzen
