EU Accuses TikTok of Breaching Digital Rules Over Advertisement Transparency The EU accused TikTok on Thursday of breaking digital rules after concluding that the Chinese-owned social media platform was not transparent enough about advertisements. The European Commission “found that TikTok does not provide the necessary information about the content of the advertisements, the users targeted by the ads, and who paid for the advertisements”, it said in a statement. It is the first time it has formally accused TikTok of breaching the Digital Services Act (DSA), the EU’s landmark online content law. “In our preliminary view, TikTok is not complying with the DSA in key areas of its advertisement repository, preventing the full inspection of the risks brought about by its advertising and targeting systems,” the EU’s digital chief, Henna Virkkunen, said. TikTok said it was reviewing the commission’s findings and remained “committed” to complying with the DSA. TikTok has said it does not allow the display or promotion of dangerous behaviors related to eating habits and weight loss. The DSA has more stringent rules for the biggest platforms, and demands tech giants do more to counter the spread of illegal and harmful content as well as disinformation. The EU last year accused X, owned by US tech billionaire Elon Musk, of breaching the DSA over its blue checkmarks for certified accounts. And as part of a wide-ranging probe, the EU is looking into the spread of illegal content and the effectiveness of the platform’s efforts to combat disinformation. “We disagree with some of the commission’s interpretations and note that guidance is being delivered via preliminary findings rather than clear, public guidelines,” a TikTok spokesperson said. Under the DSA, the world’s largest digital companies must establish an advertisement library that shows information about the adverts that run on their platforms. The EU hopes that any ads library is then easily accessible to researchers and civil society to detect scam adverts and hybrid threat campaigns. Adapted from https://www.thejakartapost.com

Addax: A Critically Endangered Desert Antelope Addax (Addax nasomaculatus), also known as the white antelope and the screwhorn antelope, are the most desert-loving antelope species. They are native to the Sahara Desert. With their pale summer coats and large hooves, they are highly specialized to live in some of the hottest and driest regions of the desert, one of the harshest habitats on the planet. The addax is a sandy to almost white color during the summer, darkening to a grayish brown in the winter. White markings are present on the face, ears, belly, hips, and legs, and there is a black tuft of hair on the forehead. Horns are present on both males and females, average about 72 cm in length. They have approximately 1.5 to 3 spiral twists. The hooves are widely splayed as an adaption to travelling over desert sand. The addax head-body length is 150-170 cm, shoulder height is 95-115 cm, and tail length is 25-35 cm, with males being slightly larger than females. These large antelopes are well-suited for desert life. Their white haircoats reflect the rays of the scorching desert sun, and their splayed hooves permit easy travel on sand. Their hooves also release a scent on the ground that helps an addax find its herd if separated. Addax fur also changes from bright white in the summer to brown in the winter. Addax rest during the warmest hours of the day and take shelter near bushes and rocks. They also may dig shallow holes for themselves in the cooler earth. Uncontrolled hunting has reduced the species to ranging in only a few remote areas of sand dunes in the desert, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has classified the addax as a critically endangered species since 2000. The number of survivors in the wild is estimated at fewer than 100 animals in Mauritania, Niger, and Chad. However, several hundred addaxes are maintained in American and European zoos and on private ranches. Adapted from various sources

Bali— Indonesia’s resort island of Bali is known for its packed beach clubs and streets that bustle with hoards of tourists and traffic, but once a year it enjoys 24 hours of blissful silence. The annual hush descended over the island on Saturday morning for Nyepi – a day of silence on the Hindu calendar that is closely monitored by an army of patrol guards called ”Pecalang”. Everyone on the island – locals and tourists alike – is expected to stay at home for 24 hours beginning at 6 a.m. Bali time. Traffic is forbidden and even the airport shuts down for the duration. Making sure everyone complies is the Pecalang, who number in their thousands and serve as protectors of Bali’s rich heritage. ”Apart from guarding the traditional village area, [Pecalang] are coordinating, informing, and educating people who are not Hindus,” I Gusti Agung Ketut Kartika Jaya Seputra, head of the Balinese traditional community agency, told AFP. At the heart of the centuries-old tradition, which has been a public holiday since the 1980s, is self-reflection, with no work, travelling, or entertainment. Street lamps are turned off and you can expect a knock on the door and a lecture if the Pecalang spot a house light visible. Essential public services such as hospitals get an exception, with lights restricted to the inside of the buildings. The Pecalang, volunteers appointed by their village, patrol to make sure everyone complies. ”It applies for a lifetime, until the person concerned can no longer carry out their duties,” said Gede Kamajaya, a lecturer at Bali’s Udayana University. Seputra says all religions and communities present in Bali must be informed about Nyepi so the day ”can be understood” and adhered to. The past has seen some curious tourists attempt to leave their hotels, but they face the wrath of the Pecalang and risk arrest or even deportation. Known as the “forest giraffe,” the okapi looks more like a cross between a deer and a zebra. Nevertheless, it’s the giraffe’s only living relative. It is a cud-chewing hoofed mammal that is placed along with the giraffe in the family Giraffidae (order Artiodactyla). It serves as the flagship species (a popular species that has become a symbol for the conservation of a region) for the Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the only place where it can be found in the wild. Although it is related to the giraffe, the okapi has a shorter neck and shorter legs. The coat of the okapi is sleek and deep brown, almost purple, with the sides of the face pale white, and the forehead and ears may have a dull reddish cast. The buttocks, thighs, and tops of the forelegs are horizontally striped with black and white, and the lower parts of the legs are white with black rings above the hooves. Male okapis average about 2.5 metres (about 8 feet) long and stand about 1.5 metres (about 5 feet) at the shoulder. Adult males typically weigh 200–300 kg (about 440–660 pounds). Adult females are slightly taller and weigh 25–50 kg (55–110 pounds) more than adult males. The eyes and ears of both sexes are large, and the tongue is long and prehensile. The male has short horns that are completely covered by skin except at the tips. Most females do not possess horns, though they often display knobby bumps in their place. The okapi lives among dense flora in the rainforest. It can blend into its surroundings thanks to the brown and white stripes on its rump, which mimic the appearance of streaks of sunlight coming through the trees. Active during the day, okapis are primarily solitary, while zebras are social animals, living in herds. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the okapi is endangered. While it’s not clear how many remain in the wild, scientists estimate that populations may have been slashed in half over the past two decades. Though the leopard is the okapi’s chief predator in the wild, human hunters pose a greater threat to the okapi’s existence. From various sources
